Review: Motion City Soundtrack – My Dinosaur Life

My Dinosaur LifeThe Fossil that was brought back to life by Motion City Soundtrack.

Motion City Soundtrack (MCS) are back with their 4th studio album entitled My Dinosaur Life (MDL) and on top of that they had Mark Hoppus, bassist for the newly reformed group blink-182, produce the album. Motion City Soundtrack + Mark Hoppus behind this record? I think it would definitely be worth a listen. After their last album Even If It Kills Me people definitely wanted to hear more of what MCS had to offer, and it was time for them to step up their game. MDL has both hard rock and soft rock elements to it and in between are songs that have a pop-punk sound to it. There is also an electronic element in some songs and this may remind people of MCS’s first album I Am the Movie. The band’s sound is ready to rock out on the radio anytime where it may be on a quiet little station or the station that plays the top 40 hits. MCS would be up there.

Although the opening seems like a slow start, the person listening will not be disappointed about the following song. From the start to finish, fans and listeners will be loving this album. The first single Disappear has a beat that just makes you want to nod your head to. Hard style rock mixed with aggressive lyrics. The second single Her Words Destroyed My Planet has a catchy sound and plays tribute to pop-culture references such as Veronica Mars and Xbox. On top of that the instrumental parts have a whistle to entertain listeners. A rock verse, chorus and bridge that makes it exciting to listen to every time. An enticing sound from start to finish. Tunes such as A Lifeless Ordinary (Need A Little Help) has a real melodic sound to it and has a soft bridge that calms the listener. A great combination of hard rock mixed with a soft bridge. Pulp Fiction explores the unique sound of MCS with electronic synths and is definitely one of their signature songs. The song may remind fans of the style of their first album I Am the Movie. History Lesson has a pop-punk sound that will delight listeners who enjoyed MCS’s last album as it has a familiar sound. Questioning and aggressive makes this a great song to listen to. This is a song that should be played loud.

After listening to this album, you wouldn’t think any less of Motion City Soundtrack. MCS has a formula where the verse is soft but then they turn up the volume and rock out at the chorus and bring it to a slow at the bridge and then wrap up the song by rocking out even harder. And in between there is the electronic parts that always pleases MCS fans. There is not one song on this album that would displease fans, this whole album will entertain listeners and fans for ages. From start to finish, the sound is unique for each song and each song has something different to it, whether it be slow, fast or melodic. They still know how to rock and make a great album.

Key songs to listen to: Delirium, Disappear, Stand Too Close, Her Words Destroyed My Planet, History Lesson

  1. Rusty, all I can say is that I totally agree with your review on MCS’s new album. Although I haven’t listened to their whole album, the song that you recommended was definitely a hit in my books. Totally agree that ‘Her Words Destroyed My Planet’ has a catchy sound and is a definite win with the rock attitude placed onto it.
